NORFOLK, Va. -- Duke's Cole Baumgartner used an escape and a riding time point to earn a 2-0 decision at 133 in the meet's final bout, propelling Duke to an 18-16 win over Old Dominion Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Center. The Blue Devils improved to 3-5 on the season, while the Monarchs fell to 4-8.
Beginning at 141, NCAA qualifier Zach Finesilver gave Duke a 3-0 lead after picking up a 4-1 decision over the Monarchs' Kevin Budock. Michael Hayes kept his momentum rolling at 149, however, when the fifth-year senior answered with a commanding 9-2 decision over Xavi Ramos.
The teams traded victories at 157 and 165, as the Blue Devils' NCAA qualifier Jake Faust defeated Austin Eads, 5-1, at 157, before No. 19 Seldon Wright mounted a 10-2 major decision over Garrett Neff at 165 to give ODU a 7-6 dual meet lead.
At 174, true freshman Antonio Agee won his fourth-consecutive match, topping Michael Wright, 4-1, to give ODU a 10-6 lead at the intermission.
After Jack Dechow and Kevin Beazley earned decision victories for the Monarchs at 184 and 197, respectively, Duke's fifth-ranked heavyweight Jacob Kasper pinned Will Hilliard in the first period to narrow ODU's team lead to 16-12.
Needing two wins at 125 and 133, Duke clinched the non-conference dual meet victory with back-to-back decisions from Thayer Atkins and Cole Baumgartner.
