MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (4-9, 1-5 MAC) fell on the road at No. 22 Central Michigan (4-2, 2-2 MAC), 28-9, Friday evening. Jack Dechow's 3-1 victory over No. 16 Jordan Ellingwood at 184 highlighted the evening for the Monarchs.

"Our kids fought hard today, but Central Michigan is a very good team and they are especially tough to wrestle in their home gym," head coach Steve Martin said. "Kevin Budock continues to impress us and pulled out a really good win against a tough kid. Jack Dechow obviously wrestled well against a guy he has wrestled his whole life, and he definitely pushed the pace and took a lot of shot attempts. Antonio Agee was in a very tight match against a nationally-ranked opponent, so he is showing that he is improving every match. Overall, we need to continue to get better as a team and keep working toward our ultimate goal, which is to get guys on the podium at the NCAA Championships in March."

Beginning at 285, CMU junior Newton Smerchek used a first period takedown, escape and riding time point to top ODU freshman Will Hilliard, 4-1, to give the Chippewas an early 3-0 lead. Veterans Brent Fleetwood and Corey Keener followed up with wins at 125 and 133, respectively, to extend the CMU lead to 10-0 after three bouts.

In a battle of freshmen at 141, ODU's Kevin Budock trailed, 1-0, with under 30 seconds in the match but converted a takedown and held on to a leg until time expired for an exciting 2-1 victory. The win got the Monarchs on the board, narrowing the Central Michigan lead to 10-3.

CMU responded with back-to-back bonus point wins at 149 and 157, as returning All-American and sixth-ranked Justin Oliver defeated Michael Hayes, 12-4, at 149, and No. 7 Collin Heffernan beat Shane Jones, 17-1, at 157.

No. 19 Seldon Wright gave the Monarchs their second victory of the night when the sophomore took down CMU freshman Logan Parks twice to cling to a 5-3 win at 165.

At 174, CJ Brucki snapped Antonio Agee's four-match win streak, as the Chippewa junior prevailed by a narrow 8-5 decision.

In the premier matchup of the night, ninth-ranked Jack Dechow scored a takedown with two seconds remaining in regulation to defeat No. 16 Jordan Ellingwood, 3-1, at 184. Dechow extended his lead in the series with Ellingwood to 3-1.

In the meet's final bout, the Chippewas' 18th-ranked Austin Severn converted a takedown into a cradle and recorded a fall over No. 14 Kevin Beazley at the 4:57 mark to give the 22nd-ranked Chippewas a 28-9 MAC dual meet victory over ODU.

"I think we left some matches out there on the scoreboard tonight," Martin continued. "We are looking forward to wrestling these guys again in five weeks at the MAC Championships."
