ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Larry Early impressed in his Old Dominion dual meet debut, earning a major decision to help the Old Dominion wrestling team (5-9, 1-5 MAC) to a 23-10 victory over Navy (7-2, 1-1 EIWA) Friday night in Annapolis.

"Four of our winning bouts were won by freshmen tonight," head coach Steve Martin said. "I thought Will Hilliard was solid tonight at heavyweight, and he is starting to figure out what he needs to do to win in that weight class. Alex Madrigal got back to form and scored takedowns and nearfall points. Kevin Budock beat a very tough opponent today in a hard-fought match. Larry Early was one point away from a tech. fall. He has a lot of offense and put up a lot of points, which was impressive. Michael Hayes continues to impress over the last few weeks, as he has beaten three ranked kids this month. Jack Dechow and Kevin Beazley both beat good kids as well and put a lot of points up. Overall, the team looked better than we have in recent matches."

The match began at 285 where ODU freshman heavyweight Will Hilliard picked up his third dual meet win of the season, topping Thomas Ott, 3-2, on the strength of a second period takedown.

At 125, Navy responded when Brant Leadbeter opened up a big third period to earn a 14-6 major decision over Steven Simpson, giving the Midshipmen a 4-3 dual meet lead.

Alex Madrigal picked up some bonus points of his own at 133, as the redshirt freshman gave the Monarchs a 7-6 team lead after majoring Cody Lambert, 8-0.

ODU picked up back-to-back decision wins at 141 and 149, as freshman Kevin Budock held off Nicholas Gil, 4-3, at 141, and Michael Hayes scored two takedowns en route to a 5-4 victory at 149.

Making his Monarch dual debut, Minnesota transfer Larry Early rolled to a 19-5 major decision over Casey Cowan at 157. The redshirt freshman held a 14-4 lead at the end of the second period and nearly picked up a tech. fall, scoring a takedown and two nearfall with a roll through cradle in the waning seconds of the bout.

Navy answered back with wins at 165 and 174, as Drew Daniels scored two takedowns to defeat No. 19 Seldon Wright, 5-3, at 165, and 16th-ranked Jadaen Bernstein clung to a 4-3 win over true freshman Antonio Agee, at 174.

At 184, No. 9 Jack Dechow scored three takedowns and cruised to a 8-2 decision over Michael Coleman to seal the fifth dual meet win of the season for the Monarchs.

In the final bout of the evening, No. 18 Kevin Beazley took down Steban Cervantes by a 10-4 decision at 197. The redshirt junior from Howell, Michigan broke open a 2-1 lead in the second period with a six-point cradle and never looked back to give ODU a 23-10 victory.
