NORFOLK, Va. -- Former Old Dominion golfer Rachel Walker has been named an assistant coach for the ODU women's golf program, head coach Mallory Hetzel announced on Thursday.

"We feel very lucky to be able to hire Rachel as our assistant coach," said Hetzel. "It is always great to have an alum on staff to help with recruiting and promoting our university to prospective student-athletes. Rachel was a reliable leader on our team and very involved on campus and in the community."

A 2017 graduate of Old Dominion, Walker competed for the Monarchs for four seasons and helped lead ODU to the 2017 Conference USA Championship, the first conference title in school history, along with the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Dumfries, Scotland, native served as the team captain for the 2017 championship team.

During her playing career, Walker was a two-time C-USA All-Tournament Team honoree and was also an individual medalist at the Golf Week Program Challenge in 2014. In addition, Walker was twice named the C-USA Golfer of the Week.

"I feel so honored to be accepting the position as the assistant coach for the women’s golf team," said Walker. "The success this team has had over the years has been outstanding and I am excited to see where we will go from here. Coaching has always been a passion of mine and I could not think of a better way to start my career than by coaching my alma mater."

Off the course, Walker made the Dean's List four times and was a three-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member. In 2017, Walker earned the prestigious C-USA Spring Spirit of Service Award. She serviced more than 12 different community service causes including the Salvation Army Food Bank, the ODU Little Feet Meet, Lambert's Point Trash Pick up and Norfolk Public School Reading Day.

"She is going to be an integral part of our success going forward," said Hetzel. "I am excited to get to work with her right away."
