Women's Lacrosse Takes On UMBC In Home Opener

A Glance At Old Dominion: The Lady Monarchs host UMBC in their home opener after defeating American, 14-12, to open the season last Saturday up in Washingon, D.C. The win improved the Lady Monarchs to 15-0 all-time versus the Eagles and gave Old Dominion a victory in three of its last four season openers. Junior Ashley Stanwick led all scorers with five goals, including the afternoon's game winner, while sophomore Kelly Kimener added in three in her return to the turf following last year's injury. Also scoring for the Lady Monarchs were junior Caroline Jacobs and Melody Shotwell with two and seniors Sarah Lautenbach and Tameka Davis with a tally apiece. Shotwell was another Lady Monarch who made a return to the turf in the game after suffering a knee injury that sidelined her all of last season. Jacobs, who led the Lady Monarchs in points a season ago, also had four assists in her stat column. Team wise the Lady Monarchs collected 15 groundballs, while Amerian had 13. ODU dominated the draws 19-9 and outshot the Eagles, 36-30. Six different Lady Monarchs scooped up two groundballs, while Jacobs recorded a game-high six draws. In goal, senior Michelle Gannon played the game's first 19 minutes and last 10 minutes allowing five goals while making five saves. Sara Larson saw over 30 minutes of action making three saves while allowing seven goals.
A Glance At The Opponent - UMBC: The Retrievers enter Saturday's game with a 3-2 record having won two straight including a 12-9 victory over ODU CAA rival Delaware on Tuesday. Kelly Fiorani currently leads her squad with 20 points having collected 15 goals and dishing out five assists. Ali Levendusky and Jen Kasper are Retrievers second leading scorers. Levendusky has posted 11 goals and four assists, while Kasper's stat line reads eight goals and seven assists. In goal, UMBC has relied upon Susie Sweeney, who has a .568 save percentage having made 42 stops on the year. She is holding on to a 8.63 goals against average.
Last Time Vs. UMBC: UMBC came within four goals of Old Dominion with 9:20 left in the game, but the Monarchs would go on a 5-0 run to seal the 16-7 victory over the Retrievers this afternoon at Loyola College's Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. UMBC opened the scoring after junior Kate Worthington tallied a goal just 41 seconds into the game. However, Old Dominion would score the next four, as Ashley Stanwick and former Lady Monarchs Colleen Carver notched two goals apiece in an eight minute span. Former retriever Anna Jacobs scored UMBC's second goal with 5:22 remaining in the first half, but the Monarchs would score three more to go up 6-2 at the break. In the second half, five different Retrievers found the back of the net within the first 21 minutes, but Old Dominion matched each goal, to maintain their four-point lead at 11-7. For the final ten minutes, Stanwick scored two more goals, while teammate Caroline Jacobs tallied three to give the Monarchs the 16-7 victory. For the game, Jacobs led UMBC in scoring with two goals, while Carver paced ODU with four goals and three assists. Kristina Raab played all 60 minutes at the net for UMBC, recording six saves, while facing 31 shots. Michelle Gannon had the win for the Monarchs, as she made 12 saves in 60 minutes, while facing 33 shots.
