NORFOLK, VA -- Seven different Lady Monarchs reached the back of the net as the second-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team shutout New Hampshire, 8-0, at Foreman Field this afternoon. The win gives Old Dominion its second shutout of the 2002 season as they improve to 5-1 overall. New Hampshire saw its four-game win streak halted and falls to 4-3 on the year.
The Lady Monarchs dominated the field for a majority of the game. The defense allowed just two Wildcat shots on goal, one in the first half by Marci Boyer (Dillsburg, PA) and the second in the second half by Jen Stamp (Tyngsboro, MA). The Old Dominion offense however outshot their opponent 39-2 and recorded 26 penalty corners, while denying any by New Hampshire.
Old Dominion took a 3-0 lead after one half of play. Senior defender Katie Moyer (Va. Beach, VA) tallied her first collegiate goal off a penalty corner set up by juniors Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) and Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) for the game-winner with 24:51 remaining in the half. Senior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) put the Lady Monarchs up 2-0 with just over 15 minutes left in the first stanza on a penalty corner. Loy and Leonetti once again assisted on the goal. Sisters Becky and Angie Loy then teamed up for the final Lady Monarch goal of the first half. Senior Becky Loy (Loysville, PA) tapped in her sister's pass at point blank distance by the right corner of the Wildcat net.
The Loy sisters then switched places to open up the second half of action. Angie Loy knocked in Becky's pass just over two minutes into play. Snow registered her second goal of the afternoon with 19:41 to go in regulation giving Old Dominion a 5-0 edge. Not long after, rookie Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, PA) entered the game and found her way to back of Wildcat net for her first collegiate goal. Leonetti and sophomore Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Netherlands) also recorded goals in the final minutes of the game.
Wildcat netminders Christine Buckley (Walpole, MA) and Julie Munson (Dover, NH) combined for 23 saves in goal. Old Dominion keeper Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) saved both New Hampshire shots on goal, while junior Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA) saw just over 12 minutes play in the second half.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action next weekend at North Carolina and William and Mary. Old Dominion faces their non-conference archrivals, the Tar Heels, on Saturday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m., followed by their second CAA match-up of the season at William and Mary on Sunday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m.
