NORFOLK, VA -- Junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) converted the winning stroke and Lady Monarch netminder Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) swatted away three Tar Heel stroke attempts to lift the top ranked Old Dominion field hockey team to a 3-2 win over non-conference rival #8 North Carolina this evening. The win gives Old Dominion a 17-3 overall record heading into the CAA Conference Tournament, while North Carolina falls to 9-9 overall.

Neither team would hold a lead in the game for very long. After a scoreless first half, sophomore Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Holland) put Old Dominion onto the board scoring on a penalty corner with 20:38 in regulation. Just 23 seconds later, the Tar Heels tied the game on a goal by Stephanie Fuller (North Potamac, MD). Laura Douglas (Whangarei, New Zealand) then gave North Carolina a 2-1 edge on a goal with seven minutes remaining, but the Tar Heels would not hold the lead for very long. Just under a minute later senior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA), appearing in her second game back since being sidelined with a knee injury, tied the game a 2-2 drilling her shot into the upper left corner of the Tar Heel net.

The score remained 2-2 after two overtime periods with the game to be decided on strokes. Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA), Bant, and Loy each converted their stroke attempts for the Lady Monarchs. Kerry Falgowski (Landenberg, PA) and Meredith Keller (Greenville, DE) each scored on their attempts for the Tar Heels, but Old Dominion keeper Freeman kept the ball from reaching the back of the net on North Carolina's final three attempts to give Old Dominion the 3-2 edge in the penalty stroke series and the win.

Old Dominion outshot the Tar Heels 19-14 and edged out North Carolina on corners, 13-12.

Freeman ended the evening with seven saves, while Tar Heel goalkeeper Katy Tran (Grantville, PA) made 13 saves in net.

The Lady Monarch field hockey team will return to action next weekend as the number one seed at the 2002 CAA Championship at Foreman Field. For further details on the championship, check out and later in the week.
