NORFOLK, VA -- Sophomore Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Netherlands) netted three unanswered goals to open up play as the second ranked Old Dominion field hockey team defeated #15 Duke, 8-1, at Foreman Field this afternoon. The Lady Monarchs improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Blue Devils fall to 2-2 with their second straight loss.

Bant got the Lady Monarchs onto the scoreboard just over a minute into the contest after collecting her own rebound from a penalty corner shot. After scoreless play for 25 minutes, which saw the Lady Monarch offense dominate the field, Bant collected her second goal of the afternoon, once again from her own rebound off a penalty corner. Just a minute later, senior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) fed Bant the ball for her third consecutive goal, giving Old Dominion a 3-0 advantage at the half. The Lady Monarch defense allowed just one Blue Devil shot on net in the opening half.

Old Dominion leading scorer Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) netted her eighth tally of the season with 28:26 remaining in the game, to start off the second half. Senior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) connected on her first of two goals on a penalty corner pass from senior Katie Moyer (Va. Beach, VA), giving the Lady Monarchs a 5-0 lead before the Duke finally found a hole in the Old Dominion defense. The Blue Devils' Chrissy Murphy (St. Louis, MO) deflected a pass to Jessica Fluck (Mohnton, PA) at the right corner of the Old Dominion net to break the shutout with 26:38 to go.

The second half continued with three more goals by the Lady Monarchs. Duke had several scoring opportunities late in the game but could not find a way into the back of the Lady Monarch net. The Lady Monarch scoring barrage continued with junior Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) open at the center of the Blue Devil net to give Old Dominion a 6-1 lead with just over 21 minutes left. Rookie Jennifer Angat (Va, Beach, VA) broke open down the center of the field and found Herrmann waiting along the right side to put ODU up 7-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining. Snow then followed with a penalty corner goal, off the passes from Loy and Leonetti, as time was expiring.

In net, senior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) returned to the starting line-up to collect five saves. Duke's Christy Morgan (Centreville, VA) and Erica Perrier (St. Lambert, Quebec) combined for 11 saves. Old Dominion outshot the Blue Devils, 23-9, and also held the advantage in penalty corners, 12-2.

The Lady Monarchs will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host New Hampshire of the America East Conference at 1:00 p.m. on Foreman Field. SCORING SUMMARY
