NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion field hockey team moved up one notch from last week to number three in the latest STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The Lady Monarchs (11-2 overall, 5-0 CAA) received 516 points and two first place votes. Maryland still holds the number one position with 567 points and 21 first place votes.

Rounding out the top five, Michigan (10-1) stayed at number two with 544 points and three first place votes, Wake Forest (9-2) moved down to number four with 510 points and two first place votes, and Michigan State (11-2) remained at number five with 471 points and one first place vote.

Seven of the eight CAA schools were once again represented this week with three in the Top 20. Old Dominion was the only school to move in the poll. James Madison (9-3) stayed at number eight, while Delaware (6-5), who the Lady Monarchs defeated 5-1 on Sunday, remained at number 17. Hofstra, Virginia Commonwealth, William and Mary, and Drexel all received votes again this week.

Other upcoming ranked Lady Monarch opponents include #6 Penn State, #9 North Carolina, and #15 Princeton.

Last weekend, the Lady Monarchs extended their winning streak to six games with victories over Princeton, 4-1, and Delaware, 5-1. They will be idle this week but return home for a three-game home stand beginning with CAA newcomer Hofstra on Thursday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m.

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, October 15th. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship field.
