Field Hockey Homestand Continues With VCU And #18 Virginia

NORFOLK, VA -- The Lady Monarch field hockey team returns to action this weekend hosting CAA opponent Virginia Commonwealth and #18 Virginia at Foreman Field. Both games are slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The Lady Monarchs (7-2 overall, 3-0) CAA will be facing their third-straight CAA opponent after handing William and Mary a 4-0 shutout last week and #8 James Madison a 7-3 defeat on Thursday night. Old Dominion has won its last 47 consecutive CAA match-ups dating back to 1995.
Virginia Commonwealth enters Saturday's game with a 3-3 overall mark and will be playing in their CAA opener. The Rams also received votes in this week's STX/NFHCA Poll. The Lady Monarchs hold the all-time series advantage 31-3-1. The teams faced each other twice last season with former Lady Monarch Adrienne Yoder scoring the lone goal of the 1-0 victory during the regular season and Old Dominion taking a 7-1 win in the CAA semi-final.
The Rams are led by first-year head coach and former Lady Monarch Shelly Behrens (ODU '88). Her top scorer is senior forward Lauren Sparrow with five points on two goals and an assist. Senior forward Wendy Ray, sophomore midfielder Casey Smith and junior midfielder Jennifer Howard all have four points on the season. In goal, junior Abby Stiles is posting a 1.56 goals against average and .796 save percentage.
The #18 Virginia Cavaliers will be looking to snap their three-game losing streak as they enter Foreman Field on Sunday with a 4-3 overall mark. Old Dominion also holds the all-time series advantage in this series as well, 26-9. Last year in Charlottesville, junior Melissa Leonetti (Erdenhiem, PA) tallied the game-winner as the Lady Monarchs captured a 3-2 win.
The Cavaliers are led by senior back Kelli Hill with nine points on four goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Katie Slocum enters the game with two goals. In goal, junior Emily White holds a 1.46 goals against average and a .864 save percentage.
