RICHMOND, VA -- Old Dominion field hockey midfielder Rosalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the week ending September 1st.
Known as "Chilly" to her teammates, Banuelos was one of three freshman to crack the starting line-up against last weekend's opponents Michigan State and Kent State. In her collegiate debut, she helped the Lady Monarchs to a 2-0 record, firing off three shots against the opposition. Banuelos was also one of the key factors in the Lady Monarchs registering over 30 penalty corners in the two games.
This week, the Lady Monarchs open the road portion of their 2002 schedule as they take on Towson in the CAA opener on Saturday, September 7th at 1:00 p.m. and nationally powerhouse Maryland on Sunday, September 8th at 1:00 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between new league rival Towson and Old Dominion. Since joining the CAA in 1991, the Lady Monarchs have dominated the league with a 52-3 record, having won their last 33 regular season conference match-ups. Maryland and ODU are long standing rivals having met 28 times since their first meeting in 1982. Old Dominion holds the all-time series advantage 18-9-1. Last season, the Lady Monarchs went 2-0 against the Terrapins. Old Dominion defeated the then 2nd ranked Maryland squad 2-1 in their 2001 home opener on Foreman Field and later handed the then top ranked Terps a 1-0 overtime defeat on their home turf in College Park, MD.
