Field Hockey Moves To No. 1

NORFOLK, VA -- Thanks to a 3-0 week which included wins over Hostra, Drexel, and #1 Maryland, the Old Dominion field hockey team moved into first place in the latest STX/NFHCA Coaches' Poll release Tuesday. The Lady Monarchs (14-2 overall, 7-0 CAA) knock the Terps out of the top position for the first time in six weeks with 597 points and 11 first place votes.

Michigan (14-1), the defending national champions and a Lady Monarch opponent this weekend, remained in second with 584 point and 12 first place votes. Maryland (13-2) fell to third with 566 points and four first place votes, while Wake Forest (13-2) remained in fourth with 542 points and four first place nods.

CAA rival James Madison slid back one place down to number eight after a 1-1 week featuring a 4-0 win over Towson and a 1-0 loss to Delaware. Delaware and William and Mary also received votes in this week's edition of the coaches' poll.

Other upcoming opponents ranked in the poll include #6 Penn State, #9 North Carolina, and #14 Princeton.

The Lady Monarchs return to action this weekend in College Park, PA. Old Dominion will take on #2 Michigan on Saturday, October 26th in a neutral turf showdown. The Lady Monarchs will then face #6 Penn State on Sunday, October 27th.

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, October 29th. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship field.
