NORFOLK, VA -- The second-ranked Old Dominion field hockey squad reaped the benefits of a 2-0 week as sophomore Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Netherlands) was named CAA Player of the Week and freshman Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, PA) earned CAA Rookie of the Week it was announced on Monday evening by the conference office.
2001 CAA Rookie of the Year, Lotte Bant scored four goals on the Lady Monarchs' 2-0 week. Against #15 Duke, Bant scored three unanswered goals, including the game-winner, to open up the game. Her first goal, the eventual game-winner, was scored just over a minute into the contest after collecting her own rebound off a penalty corner shot. After 25 minutes of scoreless play, Bant then netted two goals within a span of a minute. Against New Hampshire, Bant was one of seven Lady Monarchs to score in the 8-0 shutout. She recorded the eighth and final goal of the game unassisted. Her defensive prowess was also key to this week's two victories. She helped allow just two shots on the Lady Monarch net this weekend and helped Old Dominion outshoot their opponents 62-11.
Rookie Janelle Engle scored her first collegiate goal just seconds after entering the game in Old Dominion's 8-0 blanking of New Hampshire. Engle, one of seven Old Dominion players to score on the afternoon, gave the Lady Monarchs a 6-0 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. Engle is the second Lady Monarch to earn Rookie of the Week honors joining Rosalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA), who received the award the first week of the season.
The Lady Monarch field hockey team (5-1, 1-0 CAA) returns to action on the road this weekend. First up on Saturday will be perennial non-conference rival North Carolina. On Sunday, Old Dominion will face William and Mary in a CAA contest.
