Norfolk, Va. - Matt Halfpenny, a former women's tennis assistant coach at William & Mary, has been named facility coordinator for Folkes Stevens Indoor Tennis Center at Old Dominion University, as announced today by Monarchs' head coach Darryl Cummings.

"We're excited about the addition of Matt to our program here at ODU," added Cummings. "He's held a variety of positions throughout his career and that diversity will be a great benefit as we embark on a new era with the opening of the Folkes Stevens Indoor Tennis."

Halfpenny has worked as a pro at the Sommerville Tennis Club in Sommerville, S.C. (1994-1995), Brickyard Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (1995-1997), Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, S.C., in 1998, and the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville, Mass., in 1999. He was also the Director of the North Carolina State University Wolfpack Junior Tennis Camps from 2002-2006, and most recently coordinated the Nike Tennis Camp in Williamsburg.

In 2005 the Wolfpack finished the season at No. 46 in the final ITA poll. The team's 15 wins were the most since 1988 and the 12-0 start marked the second-best start and second-longest winning streak in school history. During Halfpenny's tenure at North Carolina State the Wolfpack had a pair of First-Team All-ACC performers in William Noblitt (2006) and Conor Taylor (2004).

At Brown University Halfpenny was part of taking the Bears' program to new heights, garnering Wilson ITA Region I Assistant Coach of the Year honors for his efforts. In 2002 Brown won its first ever Ivy League title, advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Brown also qualified for the 2002 National Team NCAA Indoor Championships as one of the top 16 teams in the country, another first in the program's history. The Bears were the top-ranked team in their region during 2002 for the first time ever as well.

During his playing career at Charleston Southern, Halfpenny competed for four conference championships, winning titles in 1996 and 1998, and finishing second in 1995 and 1997. The 1996 title was the first Big South title for Charleston Southern. As a junior, he teamed with Nicholas Lavalle to reach the quarterfinals of NCAA Region II doubles championship. His team was ranked as high as eighth in Region II in 1996. Halfpenny earned All-Big South Conference honors in 1995, 1996, and 1997, and was co-captain in 1997 and 1998.

"I'd like to thank athletic director Dr. Jim Jarrett and Coach Cummings for this great opportunity to be the facility coordinator for Folkes Stevens Indoor Tennis Center," says Halfpenny. "There is tremendous growth happening on campus and I'm honored to be part a new chapter in ODU tennis. I'm looking forward to working with the university and the Hampton Roads community so that together we can make this one of the top tennis facilities in the country."

A 1998 graduate of Charleston Southern, Halfpenny earned his bachelor's degree in business administration. He and his wife Christine, William and Mary's head lacrosse coach, reside in Williamsburg. The couple has a son, Jackson, born on Dec. 7, 2005.
