NORFOLK, VA -- Senior midfielder Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) tipped in the game-winner off the right corner with exactly two minutes remaining in the first overtime to give the Lady Monarch field hockey team a 3-2 victory over Michigan State in both team's season openers on a blustery day at Foreman Field.
The Spartans opened up scoring as Judith Harrigen tipped a pass to Annebet Beerman off a penalty corner to give Michigan State a 1-0 lead with just over 12 minutes into play. Old Dominion tied the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute off a penalty corner as senior Katie Moyer (Va. Beach, VA) fed Herrmann a pass along the right corner. Junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) found a hole along the left side of the Spartan net for an unassisted tally in the 23rd minute of the first half that gave Old Dominion a brief 2-1 lead. Michigan State tied the game at 2-2 just over three minutes later on Beerman's second goal of the afternoon.
Neither team was able to capitalize on their shots in the second half forcing overtime, however the Lady Monarchs dominated the offense outshooting Michigan State 7-1 in the second half. With two minutes on the game clock in the first overtime session, Loy came by the left side of the Spartan goal and launched a pass across the net to find Herrmann in the right corner who put away the game-winner for the Lady Monarchs first win of 2002.
Herrmann, who ranked seventh in the country last year in goals scored, finished the afternoon with four points on two goals, while her teammate Loy captured three points on a goal and an assist. Old Dominion outshot the Spartans 22-8 and also held the advantage in penalty corners 21 to 6. In net, Lady Monarch netminder Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) recorded four saves, while Michigan State's Christina Kirkaldy made 13 stops.
In second game of the afternoon, Kent State overcame a 2-0 first half deficit for a 3-2 overtime come from behind victory over the William and Mary Tribe. The Golden Flashes' Tess Meuleman converted on a penalty stroke 32 seconds into the OT session in the season open for both teams as well.
William and Mary took a 2-0 lead in the first half of play off of two goals by Ginny Sutton. Sutton's first goal was unassisted at the seven minute mark, while her second came from the right side of the net as Kristen Southerland made a pass across the Golden Flash net with 19:27 into the first half.
The Golden Flashes were able to keep the Tribe from scoring in the second half and tie the game at 2-2 to force overtime. Kristen Clayton caught the rebound off a shot by Lauren Graninetti to put Kent State up on the board just over two minutes into play in the second stanza, 2-1. Kristen Johnson then tied the game just before the 22nd minute in a scramble in along the right corner of the Tribe net.
Kent State just edged out the Tribe in shots on net 11-12, while William and Mary held the advantage in the penalty corner category, 14-7. In goal, the Golden Flashes' Jessica Creeden stopped a total of six shots on goal, while the Tribes' Claire Miller made five stops.
All four teams will return to action tomorrow on Foreman Field. Michigan State will face William and Mary at noon, while the Lady Monarchs meet Kent State for the first-time in school history following the Tribe/Spartan match-up.
