Field Hockey Ranked Second In First Coaches' Poll Of The Year

NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion field hockey team was ranked second in the first STX/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Poll released Tuesday morning. The Lady Monarchs, who hold a 3-1 overall mark, collected 483 points, while Maryland (4-0) topped the list with 528 points and 21 first place votes.

Rounding out the top five are Michigan (3-1), Louisville (2-0), and fellow Colonial Athletic Association rival, James Madison (3-0). In all, four CAA teams are ranked in this week's poll including Old Dominion in second, James Madison in fifth, Hofstra at 18th, and Delaware at 20th. William and Mary, along with Virginia Commonwealth received votes.

Other upcoming Lady Monarch opponents ranked in the poll include North Carolina (#6), Virginia (#9), Penn State (#12), Princeton (#13), and Duke (#15).

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, September 17th. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship Field.

The Lady Monarchs return to action this weekend as they host #15 Duke and New Hampshire at Foreman Field. Both games are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
