#1 Field Hockey Downs Defending Champs In Overtime

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (October 26, 2002) -- In a showdown between the top two field hockey teams in the nation, #1 Old Dominion defeated #2 and NCAA defending national champion Michigan, 4-3, in overtime. Sophomore and 2001 CAA Rookie of the Year Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Netherlands) scored the game-winner just over four minutes into the overtime session. The Lady Monarchs, winner of their last 10 straight contests, improve to 15-2 overall, while Michigan falls to 15-2 overall.

The Lady Monarchs developed a 3-0 lead early in the first half. The nation's points leader, junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) tallied the Lady Monarchs first goal less than four minutes into the game. Senior Katie Moyer (Va. Beach, VA), off the feed from senior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA), extended the Old Dominion lead to 2-0 with 28:41 remaining. Five minutes later Snow reached the back of the Wolverine net with 23:43 on the clock giving the Lady Monarchs a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Michigan would keep the Lady Monarchs at bay through the rest of regulation. With 10:08 remaining in the first half, Wolverine leading scorer April Fronzoni got Michigan onto the score board closing the gap to 3-1 at the half.

The Wolverines scored two unanswered goals in the second half to tie the game and send it into overtime. Big 10 Player of the Week Kristi Gannon tallied a penalty corner goal with 18:44 and Fronzoni tied the game at 3-3 with six minutes left.

Bant, who was the only player on the field to fire off a shot in the overtime session, netted her third game-winner of the season with 11:46 on the clock.

Old Dominion netminder senior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) recorded five saves, while Michigan keeper Molly Maloney made three stops. The Wolverines outshot the Lady Monarchs 11-7 and both teams registered four penalty corners.

The game marked the second overtime match-up for the Lady Monarchs this season. In the season opener on August 31st, Old Dominion posted a 3-2 extra session victory over Michigan State.

The Lady Monarch field hockey team returns to action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against the #6 Penn State Lady Lions.
