NORFOLK, Va.- The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (20-3) scored within minutes of the opening whistle and Maryland Terrapins (17-4) needed overtime to advance to second round action in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament on a rainy Foreman Field.

First round action continued, as did the rain, on Foreman Field with Maryland using overtime to defeat William and Mary 2-1.

The Tribe and Terps went back and forth through the opening half until freshman forward Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, DE) from sophomore Colleen Barbieri (Centerreach, NY) with 13:11 on the clock gave Maryland a 1-0 lead.

Maryland fired away on the Tribe net 14 times in the second half, but the William and Mary defense, behind eight second half saves by goalkeeper senior Claire Miller (Va. Beach, VA) and two defensive saves by sophomore Anna Davis (Richmond, VA), managed to stop the Terps from scoring. With time ticking away in the second half, the Tribe was awarded their lone penalty corner of the second half with 8:37 remaining. Senior Ann Ekberg (Va. Beach, VA) passed the ball to sophomore Kate Baird (Lismore, Australia) waiting at the left side of the Terp net to tie the game at 1-1.

With just under ten minutes remaining in the first overtime session, senior midfielder Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, PA) found the open hole off a penalty corner to record the golden goal for the Terps.

Miller made 11 saves in net for the Tribe, while rookie Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, NY) made three saves and played all 83 minutes in her second career start.

Maryland outshot the Tribe 20-3 and out cornered William & Mary 15-3.

Old Dominion and Maryland will face each other for the third time this season. Old Dominion holds the all-time series advantage 19-10-1. The Terps took a 2-0 victory in their first meeting back on September 8th, but the Lady Monarchs avenged the loss with a 1-0 home win on October 19th. Maryland has not defeated Old Dominion on Foreman Field since 1996. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
