Lady Monarch Field Hockey Still Number One

NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion field hockey team retained the top position in the most recent edition of the STX/NFHCA Poll with 512 points and nine first place votes. The Lady Monarchs are currently 15-3 overall and are coming off a 1-1 week which saw a win over #2 and defending national champion Michigan and a loss to #6 Penn State.

Michigan (15-2) stayed at the number two spot with 507 points and six first place votes. Wake Forest (14-2) moved up to number three with 500 points and 11 first place votes, while Maryland fell back a spot to fourth with 455 points. Michigan State remained in fifth and receive on first place vote along with 437 points.

One other CAA school was voted into the Top 20 this week. James Madison slip back one place to ninth following a 7-0 loss to Maryland. William and Mary also received votes.

The final two regular season Lady Monarch opponents are also in the Top 20 this week. North Carolina (9-8) finished at number eight, moving up a slot from last week. Princeton (8-5) remained at number 14.

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, November 5th. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship field.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Friday against Princeton at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's match-up with North Carolina will begin at 4:00 p.m. Six Lady Monarch seniors will be honored before the opening whistle. Additionally, Saturday's game will be the annual scholarship game with the $5.00 admission to benefit Old Dominion field hockey scholarships.
