NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion field hockey team (5-1, 1-0 CAA) remained in second place in the second STX/NFHCA Poll released on Tuesday. The Lady Monarchs received 551 points and two first place votes, while Maryland (6-0) still holds claim on the top spot with 575 points and 25 first place votes.

Rounding out the top five places are Michigan (5-1), CAA rival James Madison (4-0), and Wake Forest (3-2). The CAA was once again well represented in the poll with James Madison in fourth place and Delaware moving up to 14th. The Dukes are off to their best start since 1979 opening the season 4-0. The last three James Madison wins have all been against ACC teams (Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia) ranked in the top 15. The Blue Hens move up from the number 20 position after upsetting then fourth ranked Louisville, 3-2, on Sunday.

Three league teams also received votes in this week's poll, with Hofstra just missing the Top 20. William and Mary, who the Lady Monarchs will face this weekend, and Virginia Commonwealth also received votes.

The Lady Monarch field hockey team returns to action on the road this weekend. First up on Saturday will be perennial non-conference rival, #10 North Carolina. On Sunday, Old Dominion will face William and Mary in a CAA contest.

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, September 24th. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2002 Division I Championship field.
