HUNTINGTON, WVa. – Jesse Miralrio’s golden goal in the 8th minute of overtime, helped the Monarchs pick up their first conference win of the season. Old Dominion’s six-game winless streak ended with the 1-0 win Wednesday night against Marshall at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. ODU improves to 4-6-2, 1-3-1 while Marshall falls to 6-9-1, 1-4-1.

The score remained knotted at zero through 97 minutes of action in Huntington, WVa. The Monarchs received a late corner kick and senior midfielder Jesse Miralrio connected with the net off the deflected pass inside the six-yard box in the 98th minute of action. Jimmy Filerman assisted on the goal to help give ODU its first conference win of the season.

The Monarchs held the slight advantage in shots 11-10 through two scoreless periods with seven of them coming on frame. Miralrio led the team with seven shots, five on goal, on the night. ODU finished with 13 shots to Marshall’s 12 with a 9-5 shot on goal margin.

Alex Tiesenhausen stopped five shots by the Thundering Herd to collect his third shutout of the year improving to 4-6-2, 1-3-1. Cole Stringer, Nick Hutchinson, Christian Wirth and Garrett Walke helped to solidify the Monarch defense against an aggressive Thundering Herd attack.

Marshall’s Daniel Jodah led the home team with six shots while goalkeeper Trevor Clemons stopped eight ODU attempts letting the ninth through to the net.

“It was a great win on the road and we are very proud of the team,” said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. “Hopefully this win sets the tone for a strong C-USA finish beginning Saturday at home versus FIU.”

The Monarchs return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, as they host the Panthers of FIU at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
