ODU ATHLETICS TEAMS WITH SENTARA HEALTHCARE ON STUDENT-ATHLETE CARDIAC PROGRAM
By ODU Athletics
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University Athletics has partnered with Sentara Healthcare to provide incoming student-athletes with EKG and EchoCardiogram tests.
The program, spearheaded by Sentara cardiologist George Sarris, M.D., is currently being implemented for incoming student-athletes from all sports at Old Dominion.
"Although rare, the sudden death of an athlete is both shocking and tragic and increases the awareness of the need to identify those student-athletes who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death. There is evidence that with proper screening, like what we are providing to ODU student-athletes, some forms of sudden cardiac death in athletes can be prevented," said George Sarris, M.D., Sentara Cardiology Specialists.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Sentara to provide what ultimately could prove to be life-saving cardiac baseline testing of all ODU student-athletes” stated ODU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig. “This is a unique partnership between Sentara and ODU athletics and it further illustrates the commitment being made by ODU to provide a world class academic and athletic experience for all 550 of our student-athletes.”
“These tests provide a better way to diagnose serious potential heart issues,” stated Marty Bradley, ODU Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. “Standard physical examinations and listening to the heart typically can’t pick up serious abnormalities in the heart,” he added.
While numerous schools administer EKG and EchoCardiogram tests to football and basketball players, the plan at ODU will cover all sports.
“Partnerships with local organizations and universities like ODU help elevate the outcomes of Sentara Heart programs and improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Thomas Klevan, M.D., Medical Director, Sentara Heart Hospital.
