Lady Monarchs Drop Final Exhibition Game, 81-68, To Team Concept

NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team fell in its final exhibition game, 81-68, to Team Concept, a squad featuring several former WNBA players, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Tuesday night. Senior forward Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) led the Lady Monarchs with a double-double on 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Team Concept's Kate Starbird, a former member of the Stanford Cardinal squad that fell to Old Dominion in 1997's overtime national semifinal thriller and the 1997 National Player of the Year, led all scorers with 24 points. Starbird netted 20 first half points, but was kept in check in the second half only collected four. Former Lady Monarch Sharron Francis' returned to Norfolk netting nine points and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Team Concept got off to a quick start in the first half, grabbing a 7-2 lead by the first timeout. The Lady Monarchs made a charge to take a 19-17 lead off a Coker lay up and led by as much as four, 21-17, before Team Concept regained the lead for good, 22-21, at the 10:14 mark. The Lady Monarchs trailed by nine points at the half, 46-37.

Old Dominion came out strong in the second half, tying the game up at 52-52 with 13:17 left in the game. Team Concept, however, went on a quick 8-0 run to take over the lead, 60-52. The Lady Monarch would pull within four points, 60-56, at the 9:41 mark before Team Concept began draining three-pointers to take a 15-point lead, 78-63, with four minutes left in the game.

For the game, the Lady Monarchs had three players in double-figures. Along with Coker's 21 points, sophomore forward/guard Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, FL) poured in 11 and junior guard Shareese Grant (Virginia Beach, VA) added in 10 points.

Team Concept was led by Starbird's 24, followed by Beth Record with 16 points and Stacey Clinesmith with 13 points.

Old Dominion shot just 45 percent from the free-throw line for the game (9-of-20). From the floor the Lady Monarchs were 29-of-72, shooting 40.3 percent, while Team Concept connected on 29-of-67 to finish the night 43.4 percent from the field. The Lady Monarchs continued their strong presence on the boards, holding a 54-36 rebounding edge for the game.

The Lady Monarchs will now look forward to opening the 2003-04 regular season. Old Dominion kicks off the year traveling to the University of Colorado in Boulder to participate in the WBCA Preseason Classic. The Lady Monarchs, who take on the second toughest non-conference schedule in the country, will face Colorado in the opening round followed by either Notre Dame or Auburn in the championship/consolation bracket. Both Colorado and Notre Dame reached the Sweet 16 of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, while Auburn captured the 2003 WNIT Title.
