HOUSTON, Texas - No. 9 seed Old Dominion University women's tennis fell to No. 1 seed Rice, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships Friday afternoon in Houston.
The Lady Monarchs end the year with a 13-9 record, while Rice improves to 18-4 and takes on the SMU/Tulane winner in the semifinals tomorrow.
Rice won the doubles point but the Lady Monarchs put up a strong effort. No. 20 Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath won 9-8 over Nikol Hristova and Diana Ivanova. The No. 2 doubles match was tied 8-8 at the time the Owls clinched the point. Solomiya Zinko and Daniela Trigo won 8-3 at No. 3.
Katie Gater put the Owls on top 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles and No. 43 Beazant was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 1.
Kimberly Anicete clinched the match for the Owls with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 5.
At No. 2 singles, Nikol Hristova dropped the first set to No. 70 Dominique Harmath but was ahead 4-1 in the second set. Ivana Vukovic was leading Liat Zimmerman 6-3, 2-1 at No. 3 singles while Zinko was leading Nika Khmolovska 6-3, 2-0 at No. 6.
