RICHMOND, VA--The Richmond Spiders scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on to defeat the Monarchs, 7-6 Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field, ending ODU's four-game winning streak. Richmond improves to 10-2, while the Monarchs are 6-4.
The Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 lead when freshman outfielder Connor Myer led off the contest with a solo homer, then junior rightfielder Ben Verlander led off the top of the second inning with a solo shot.
Richmond rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fouth capped off by a three-run homer by Aaron Newman.
In the top of the fifth inning, ODU came back to tie the contest with three runs. Sophomore leftfielder Josh Eldridge singled home PJ Higgons, and rightfielder Ben Slaton singled home both Tyler Urps and Eldridge.
In the Bottom of the fifth Bret Williams doubled home Tanner Stanley, followed by an RBI single from Jansen Fraser to bring home Mayers for a 7-5 Spider lead.
both ODU added a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Negrini to bring home pinchrunner Pat Kane for the 7-6 final Josh Eldrige led the Monarchs with two hits on the day. Richmond was led by Tanner Stanley and Bret Williams with two hits each.
Reliever Peter Bayer picked up the win and Ryan Cook earned his third save of the year as the Spider Pitchers fanned 13 Monarchs.
ODU returns to action Wednesday afternoon when they host the Pirates of East Carolina at 3 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball complex.
