NORFOLK, VA--ODU sophomore leftfielder Josh Eldridge's bases loaded hit in the ninth brought in two runs and capped a four-run Monarch rally in a 6-5 victory over the Tribe of William and Mary Friday Night in the "Bark In the Park Night" at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
William and Mary took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but ODU junior third baseman Jordan Negrini started the rally with a single, followed by another hit by sophomore catcher Michael Perez. Tyler Urps bloop hit loads the bases and freshman Connor Myers doubles to bring home Negrini and Perez. Ben Verlander was intentionally walked to load the bases and Eldridge lined a one-hopper
to the leftfield fence to bring home both Urps and Myers for the game-winner.
Trailing 3-0, ODU scored in the seventh as Josiah Burney led off with a triple and scored on Austin McGowan's ground out.
In the eighth, trailing 4-1 ODU added another run when freshman pinchitter Brian Beard singled home Connor Myers.
Joining Eldridge with two RBI on the night, was Myers. Negrini, Perez and Myers
each had two hits, while shortstop Tyler Urps had three hits on the night. ODU tallied 13 base hits to the Tribe's 10. William Shaw led William & Mary with three hits on the evening.
Tribe starter Brett Koehler pitched seven innings, walked no batters and struckout four in a no decision. ODU's junior righthander Dean Ali pitched seven innings allowing three runs (2 earned) with four walks and seven strikeouts in a no decision . ODU junior Brad Gero picked up the win in relief.
Game two of the ODU-WM Optima Health All-Sports Challenge is Saturday at 4 p.m. The Challenge series is tied at 55 points each for both schools. The winner of the series wins the challenge.
