NEWARK,DE--The Delaware Blue Hens(27-14/12-7) exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to defeat Old Dominion (21-21/11-11), 12-5 in the opening game of the three-game CAA series at Bob Hannah Stadium. ODU's junior firstbaseman Josiah Burney slammed two solo homers today.
The Monarchs took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh when Delaware sent 11 batters to the plate. Nick Ferdinand walked with the bases loaded to force home Joe Giacchino to tie the game at 5-5, then D.J. Long's infield single brought home Brock Niggebrugge to take the lead. Pinch hitter Andrew Burgess later singled in two runs to complete the scoring, giving UD an 11-5 lead.
ODU got on the board first thanks to a solo homer by Josiah Burney (Gloucester, Va.) in the second inning.
In the bottom half of the second UD came back to tie the game at 1-1 with back-to-back doubles by D.J. Long and EJ Stoltzfus. In the fourth Stoltzfus singled home Jimmy Yezzo to tie the game at 2-2, then the Blue Hens took the lead when Stoltzfus was caught in a rundown, but Nick Ferdinand scored from third before the out was made. In the sixth Stoltzfus doubled home Ferdinand.
In the Fourth, ODU took the lead, 2-1 on an bases loaded RBI single by freshman PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) which brought home Burney. In the fifth ODU re-took the on Josh Eldridge's (Lorton, VA.) double which scored Myers. Eldridge came home on a groundout RBI by designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.). Burney then belted his second homer of the day to give the Monarchs a 5-3 lead.
EJ Stoltzfus led UD with three hits and three runs batted in. ODU was led by Josiah Burney with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Thirdbaseman Jordan Negrini (Kihei, Hawaii) also had two hits for the Monarchs.
UD's righthander Chad Kuhl pitched eight innings , striking out nine for his seventh win of the season. The two teams play again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
