CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA-Jared King's basehit down the rightfield line in the bottom of the 10th scored Brandon Cogwell to lift seventh ranked Virginia to a 10-9 victory over Old Dominion Wednesday night at Davenport Field.
The Monarchs got on the board first as Ben Verlander led off the game with a walk, Josh Eldridge followed with a single and Josiah Burney's groundout brought home Verlander for a 1-0 lead.
The Cavaliers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the first on groundout RBI by Mike Papi and sacrifice fly RBI by Derek Fisher.
ODU's Ben Slaton put the Monarchs up 3-2 in the third with a two-run homer, scoring Josh Eldridge. In the fourth Ben Verlander doubled home Tyler Urps and Josh Eldridge singled in Verlander for a 5-2 ODU lead. In the fifth ODU added two more runs as Jordan Negrini scored on a Michael Perez hit and Perez came home on a groundout RBI by freshman Connor Myers.
Virginia scored two in the sixth on RBI hits from Fisher and Gragnani to cut the ODU lead to 7-4.In the seventh, Ben Verlander's sacrifice fly plated Mike Perez from third for an 8-4 ODU lead, but the Cavaliers came right back as Mike Papi hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 8-8.
In the top of the eighth ODU re-took the lead on an RBI single by freshman secondbaseman PJ Higgins which plated Josh Eldridge. UVA would tied the gamewith an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth for a 9-9 score.
ODU threatened in the top of the 10th as Verlander led off with a double, but was left at third. Virginia also had a chance to win earlier in the bottom of the
ninth with runners on first and third, but Monarch pitcher Brad Gero got Nick Howard
to hit into a double play to end the threat.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th Cogswell doubled down the left field line, then scored the game winniner on Kings hit.
Josh Eldridge led ODU with four hits in six at-bats, while Verlander, Ben Slaton, Michael Perez and Tyler Urps had two hits each. Jared King and Brandon Downes each had three hits for the Cavaliers. Mike Papi knocked in five runs for Virginia.
ODU returns to action Friday night to begin a three-game series with William and Mary at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. "Bark in the Park night will begin at 6 p.m.The contest can also be heard live on STAR1310 AM radio with Ted Alexander and
