ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia State scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and withstood a late Old Dominion University baseball rally for a 7-4 win and series sweep over the Monarchs Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.
After scoring a combined 22 runs on Friday and Saturday, GSU was held to two runs by Andy Roberts. GSU broke things open with four runs in the seventh inning to break open a tie game and take a 6-2 lead. GSU loaded the bases with nobody out when Brad Gero got Josh Merrigan to ground into a double play. A run scored to give GSU a 3-2 lead but Caden Bailey followed with an RBI double and GSU brought home two more runs for the 6-2 lead.
GSU added an insurance run in the eighth before ODU started a two-out rally in the ninth. Alex Kowalczyk hit a two-run double and Connor Myers followed with a single, but Connor Stanley got a fielder's choice to end the rally and secure GSU a 7-4 win.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second, but ODU tied the score in the fifth with an RBI single from Shawn Sizemore and Josh Eldridge scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Andrew Fessler earned the win for GSU, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs.
ODU returns home on Wednesday, March 20 when they take on Virginia State at 6 p.m.
