HAMPTON, VA- The Tribe of William and Mary (33-19) defeated Old Dominion (27-24), 4-3 Tuesday evening at War Memorial stadium in a non-conference contest.
The Tribe jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs on a groundout RBI by Ryan Lindemuth which scored Ryan Brown . William Shaw and Michael Katz later scored in that inning on an RBI single by Jonathan Sarty.
ODU got on the board in the fifth when Ben Verlander doubled and scored on Josh Eldridge's double. Sophomore catcher Michael Perez' deep sacrifice fly to the wall in left scored Eldridge from third to cut the Tribe's lead to 3-2.
The Monarchs threatened in the fourth with the bases loaded and seventh with two on, but were unable to score.
The Tribe extended its lead to 4-2 with a leadoff solo homer by Michael Katz, his third of the season in the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth ODU shortstop Tyler Urps got a two-out single and came home on on a triple by freshman centerfielder Connor Myers, to make it 4-3. Junior
thirdbaseman Jordan Negrini led ODU with two hits on the night.
The Tribe's Matt Wainman came on in the eighth inning and picked up his seventh save of the season, fanning four Monarchs and gaining the win for John Sheehan (5-3).
ODU returns to action Wednesday night for its final home game at 6 pm against Longwood. A win would give the Monarchs its 20th victory at home this season.
