NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse program will join the Atlantic Sun Conference as an affiliate member in 2014-15, as announced by ODU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig.
“We are really looking forward to our affiliation with the Atlantic Sun Conference. This conference is moving in the right direction and will be a great fit for our program and the future of ODU Lacrosse,” says ODU head coach Heather Holt. “Becoming a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference will positively impact our team while developing healthy rivalries with new opponents.”
The Atlantic Sun added women’s lacrosse as a conference championship sport in the spring of 2013, with Jacksonville winning the first league crown. The Lady Monarchs will compete with Stetson, Mercer, Jacksonville, Furman, Detroit, Howard and Kennesaw State in the spring of 2015 in the conference.
“The Atlantic Sun offers our women’s lacrosse program a great opportunity to expand its recruiting footprint throughout the Southeast, to compete for conference championships and ultimately earn a spot in the NCAA tournament. We are grateful to the members of the A-Sun for the affiliate membership invitation and look forward to joining the league in 2014-15,” says Selig.
The program will compete as an independent in 2013-14. Lacrosse had competed in the Colonial Athletic Association since 1992, winning the conference crown in 1995 and boasts 13 All-Americans with 35 Academic All-Americans.
“Women’s lacrosse continues to be one of the country’s fastest growing sports, and we are very proud to add a program such as Old Dominion to the Atlantic Sun,” says A-Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “As the sport grows in popularity, the A-Sun is pleased to be a destination for student-athlete competitive opportunities and access to the NCAA Championship. Old Dominion University will be an outstanding affiliate member and we look forward to the contributions their women’s lacrosse teams will make to the A-Sun.”
Twelve of Old Dominion’s athletic programs will join Conference USA on Monday, July 1, including men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, swimming, baseball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, and rowing. Football becomes a full member in Conference USA in 2014. The ODU field hockey team will begin competition this fall as an associate member of the BIG East Conference, while wrestling joins the Mid-American Conference as an associate member this year. The co-ed and women's sailing programs compete as a non-scholarship member of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association.
