NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball head coach Karen Barefoot announced their 2013-14 schedule today.
The Lady Monarchs will face 11 teams that made postseason tournaments last season and square off 10 times against teams that won 20 or more games in 2012-13. Highlighting the schedule is a trip to Duke, a team that went 33-3, made it to the Elite Eight and advanced to the regional finals in Norfolk a year ago. The Blue Devils are one of three ACC foes that ODU will face this season.
Other teams on the schedule that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago include C-USA Tournament Champion Tulsa, along with Marist and Middle Tennessee. Old Dominion will see seven teams that made it into the WNIT a year ago in UAB, Charlotte, Tulane, Bowling Green, FIU, Boston University and a pair of contests with East Carolina.
“It’s a great time to be a part of women’s basketball at ODU,” said Lady Monarch head coach Karen Barefoot. “Without a doubt our schedule is competitive from start to finish. We are thrilled to be a part of the first annual Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Basketball Challenge, along with adding Duke, gives us an opportunity to compete with the best of the best.”
ODU will open their schedule with a three-game home swing at the Ted Constant Convocation Center beginning Nov. 9 against Delaware State. The Lady Monarchs then entertain Virginia Tech on Nov. 11 and Radford on Nov. 17.
Hitting the road for the first, Old Dominion will take part in the 2013 Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge in Columbus, Ohio where they take on Ohio State, Bowling Green and Marist on Nov. 22-24. The Lady Monarchs round out the event in Springfield, Mass. on Dec. 1 when they take on Boston University.
Returning home in early December for a pair of games, ODU faces UMass-Lowell on Dec. 4 and Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 7 before getting back on the road for a four-game stretch that heads into 2014 as they visit Pittsburgh on Dec. 15. The Lady Monarchs then take on former CAA rivals William and Mary on Dec. 21 and VCU on Dec. 30 before rounding out their road stretch at Duke on Jan. 2 ODU faces North Carolina Central at home on Jan. 5 in their final non-conference contest.
Old Dominion begins their inaugural season in Conference USA with a 16-game conference slate that begins on Jan. 8 at Charlotte. ODU takes on Tulane in their C-USA home opener on Jan. 11 while also hosting FAU on Jan. 18, UAB on Jan. 22, Marshall on Feb. 1, Tulsa on Feb. 5, UTEP on Feb. 15, Louisiana Tech on Feb. 26 and round their home schedule with their second game of the season against ECU on March 5.
On the road, Old Dominion travels to Charlotte on Jan. 8, Southern Miss on Jan. 15, Middle Tennessee on Jan. 25, ECU on Jan. 29, North Texas on Feb. 8, Rice on Feb. 19, UTSA on Feb. 22 and FIU on March 1.
The C-USA Basketball Championships are scheduled for March 11-15 at the Don Haskins Center and at Memorial Gym in El Paso, Texas.
