NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team will open up play against UMBC in an exhibition match on Monday, August 12. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Monarchs added a total of 11 freshmen to this year’s roster, after losing six student-athletes to graduation. Last season Old Dominion proved they could play with anyone, as they knocked off the top two CAA schools in Hofstra and Drexel.
UMBC hails from the American East Conference and will look to rebound from last year’s 1-11-5 season. Last season, freshmen Preslie Quaranta and Bria Bass tied for a team-best three goals apiece. Youth seems prevalent for the Retrievers, as their freshmen accounted for two-thirds of the team’s scoring during the 2012 campaign. Last year goalkeeper Lauren Kadet surpassed Robin Babaris for second place all-time at UMBC in career saves (308); Kadet is now back for her senior campaign
This is the first season that the Lady Monarchs will compete in the C-USA. ODU will be joined in the C-USA East Division by Charlotte, East Carolina, FIU, Middle Tennessee, Marshall, UAB and Florida Atlantic. Colorado College, North Texas, Rice, Tulsa, UTEP, Louisiana Tech, UTSA and Southern Miss round out the C-USA West Division.
