Norfolk, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team has brought on Joseph Palmer and Laura Miller as assistant coaches, head coach Dan Garbutt announced on Tuesday.

"I am really excited to work with this coaching staff and get ready for the season," Garbutt said.

For the past 7 years Joseph Palmer has been the Freshmen Men's Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Drexel University. The 2012-2013 season was monumental for Palmer and Drexel.  The Drexel Freshmen 8 capped off an undefeated season with an open water Gold Medal performance at the Dad Vail Regatta. Drexel also took Gold in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 2-; along with the 2nd Varsity 8 taking the Silver Medal. These finishes lead Drexel to it's first ever team championship at the Dad Vail Regatta.

Prior to coaching at Drexel, Palmer spent the 2005-2006 school year as the Head Men's Coach at UNC-Chapel Hill. At UNC, Palmer coached championship winning boats in the Varsity 4 and Freshmen 8.

Before UNC, Palmer was the Assistant Coach for the Purdue University Women's Rowing Team. During his 2 seasons at Purdue, Palmer's Freshmen 8 took home Gold Medals at the Dad Vail Regatta (2004) and the SIRA Regatta (2004&2005). Palmer's Freshmen 4 also took home the Silver Medal at Dad Vails (2004) and the Gold Medal at the SIRA Regatta (2004).

Palmer was also a successful rower; he competed for the Marietta College Men's Heavyweight Rowing Team. During his time at Marietta, Palmer earned 3 Varsity Letters and won numerous races. In 4 appearances at the Dad Vail Regatta, Palmer took home 2 Gold Medals and a Bronze. In 2002, during Palmer's senior year, Marietta took home the Men's Team Championship at the Dad Vails; it's first since 1973.

Palmer graduated from Marietta College in 2002 with degrees in Advertising and Public Relations; and a minor in Journalism. Palmer has spent the last 17 years as a Lifeguard for the Margate City Beach Patrol and is also an EMT. Palmer currently lives in Norfolk, VA with his fiancé Andria Haneman; and their 2 dogs Hannah and Maggie.

Miller was a graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. In 2012 and 2013 she coached the Lady Volunteer novice squads and guided the 2012 team to a 2nd place finish in Conference USA.

Miller rowed collegiately at the University of Tennessee, where she was a 2010 Collegiate Rowing All-American. In 2010 she was named Conference USA Rower of the Year and participated in the NCAA Rowing Championship 3 of the 4 years she attended. She also rowed on an international level in New Zealand. In 2011 she competed at the New Zealand Banklink Club National Championships and won gold in the women's Senior Pair and a bronze in the women's premier quad.

Outside of rowing, Miller graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2010 with a Bachelor's of Science in Biochemisty and earned a Master's of Science in Kinesiology in May of 2013.
