On September 26, 2013, Old Dominion Assistant Coach and three-time NCAA Tournament Qualifier (2006-2011) Kyle Hutter arrived in Yakutsk, Russia to train and wrestle at an international level.

“Going to Russia has definitely been a different experience,” said Hutter. “The love they have for wrestling and its competitors is amazing. All the training here is a little bit shorter compared to back home. Training partners have been great giving us a different feel each day. One of the coaches was even telling us how he won his World Championship so we are trying to pick up new techniques from him as well.”

Hutter is currently staying at the Olympic training center in Yakutsk and is blogging about his experience via Facebook.

Editor’s Note: ODU’s Kyle Hutter will contribute periodic blogs throughout the week. In his first few reports, Hutter brings us up to speed with the first few days of training.

“After about 30 hours of travel and lost another full day due to the time change, we finally got to Yakutsk, Russia. It's just north of Mongolia and China. We are staying at their Olympic training center here in Yakutsk with little access to [the] Internet. We have only a few workouts the next couple days with the Russian and Turks before we leaving for another location on Saturday to dual Russia on Sunday. I'm trying to get used to this new sleep schedule and getting ready for Sunday!”--September 26

“It took us a 6 hour trip from Yakutsk to the Churapcha Village by bus and boat. It's an Olympic School for younger kids. They showed us their Olympic museum and gave us a show after our workout and making weight. They are well known for Olympians from the region. We are now getting ready for our dual meet tomorrow!”--September 28

“We made it back to the training center here in Yakutsk yesterday. The dual was very exciting as they had a whole ceremony and a ton of fans. Everyone loves wrestling here in Russia. For some reason, I ended up wrestling their guy up a weight from me and it didn't go as planned. I got caught in a trap arm and lost the match. I was told while he trains in Russia, he competes for Tajikistan and was an Olympian this past year. I have a couple more days until I weigh in and getting ready to wrestle in the tournament later this week.”--September 30

“All weighed in and ready to wrestle tomorrow at the Dmitry Korkin International! I feel good and am excited to compete.” – October 4

I ended up losing the bronze medal match here in Russia. It was a good experience as I was able to put a lot of points on the board today. Need to limit the mistakes. Ready to get back home to see my fiancé and everyone and get back with ODU Wrestling.” – October 5
