NORFOLK, Va. – Lelund Weatherspoon defeated Billy Curling 6-2 in the final match of the day to lift Iowa State to a 20-15 win over Old Dominion University wrestling Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
With the win, the No. 16 Cyclones move to 5-0 while the Monarchs drop to 2-2.
"Iowa State won five matches and we won five matches. The bottom line is bonus points determined the outcome and give Iowa State credit for that. I thought our kids overall gave a good effort but we definitely had a golden opportunity slip away from us," ODU Head Coach Steve Martin said. "We took away some teachable moments in this dual. We are still trying to figure out our lineup and what makes us the best team possible. We have another great opportunity in 48 hours when we have have a chance to wrestle No. 8 Virginia Tech."
At 165, Michael Moreno defeated Devin Geoghegan by a technical fall, 22-7 to give ISU a 17-15 lead heading into the final match.
The match started at 184 as No. 10 Tanner Weatherman beat Austin Coburn by a 7-2 decision and No. 3 Kyven Gadson was a 5-1 winner over Jacob Henderson at 197.
Matt Tourdot got ODU on the board at 285, defeating Ben Perna 6-2.
At 125, Brandon Jeske and Earl Hall were tied at two, with Jeske looking for back points; he was reversed by Hall and quickly pinned for the six point swing that gave Iowa State a 12-3 advantage.
Scott Festejo was an 8-2 winner at 133 to make the team score 12-6 to start a four-match streak for ODU, as No. 9 Chris Mecate followed with a 3-0 win over Gabe Moreno.
No. 16 Alexander Richardson won an 8-4 decision over Luke Goettle while No. 19 Tristan Warner was a 6-3 winner of John Nicholson that gave Old Dominion a 15-12 lead before ISU won the final two matches.
The Monarchs are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when they take on Virginia Tech at the Ted Constant Center starting at 7:30 p.m.
