NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (5-4) will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Sunday, Dec. 15, for a 2 p.m. showdown against the Pitt Panthers (5-4). ODU is currently riding a three-game winning streak after turning in convincing wins over Boston, UMass Lowell, and Maryland Eastern Shore.
These schools have met a total of four times leading up to Sunday’s showdown. Old Dominion has won three times (1978, 1979 and 1984) with Pittsburgh claiming victory once (2013).

The Pitt Panthers (5-4)
The Pitt Panthers enter Sunday’s contest at 5-4 after defeating Wagner 69-55 on Saturday, Dec. 7. The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Panthers, who had suffered back-to-back home losses to James Madison (71-61) and Buffalo (66-62).
Thus far, the Panthers are led by junior guard Brianna Kiesel, who has racked up a team-high 139 points and is averaging 15.4 per game. Kiesel also averages an impressive 4.4 assists per game and has accumulated 14 steals while shooting .756 from the free throw line. Senior forward Asia Logan enters Sunday’s matchup with 103 points on the season and leads the squad with 7.4 rebounds.
Last time out, Pitt defeated Wagner 69-55 as Brianna Kiesel led the Panthers in scoring for the seventh time in nine games this season. Additionally, 6’11 freshman Marvadene ‘Bubbles’ Anderson turned in a career-high 18-point performance while adding six rebounds and four blocks. On the season, Anderson now leads the Panthers with 20 total blocks and also currently holds an impressive .509 field goal shooting percentage.
The Panthers are coached by Suzie McConnell-Serio in her first season. The former Olympian and Hall of Fame member took the reigns last spring after serving as the head coach for the Duquesne women’s basketball program for six seasons. As a Duke, she led five teams to 20-win seasons and never turned in a losing-season.
The Old Dominion University Lady Monarch’s (5-4) Last Time Out
On Sunday, the Lady Monarchs will look to extend their winning streak to four after defeating Boston, UMass Lowell, and Maryland Eastern Shore last week. In their last two especially, ODU turned in commanding victories, as they pummeled UMass Lowell 90-57 in front of a record-setting crowd of 8,086 on Education Day and then dominated UMES 82-57. Adding to the momentum, junior forward Shae Kelley was tabbed C-USA Player of the Week after recording four consecutive double-doubles. Kelley’s accomplishment marks the first time in history that an ODU player has received the honor.
In the game against UMES, Kelley scored a game-high 24 points for the Lady Monarchs and collected 13 rebounds. Chelisa Painter also racked up a career-high 14 points and added eight rebounds to her stat sheet. Additionally, Becca Allison scored seven points in just eight minutes in the first half, as the Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 41-27 lead at halftime and never looked back.
As a team, ODU has now racked up 93 steals in comparison to opponents’ 60. The Lady Monarchs are also averaging 10.3 steals per game. Individually, Shae Kelley’s extended her scoring average to a noteworthy 17.7 points per game and is averaging 11.7 rebounds. Senior guard Stephanie Gardner trails her with an average of 11.9 points per game.
The Lady Monarchs will hit the road to take on William and Mary on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. and then will travel to VCU and Duke before returning back home on Jan. 5 when they take on North Carolina Central on Military Day.
