PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Old Dominion University women’s tennis team pulled off a huge 4-3 victory over Penn on Saturday afternoon inside the Levy Tennis Pavilion. The Lady Monarchs remain a perfect 3-0 for the spring season, while the Quakers fall to 0-1.

Last year, ODU also defeated Penn 4-3, since then both teams have made big improvements, as both squads started two freshmen on Saturday.

The Lady Monarchs started the day out by winning the first two double’s matches, giving ODU a 1-0 advantage. Speaking of freshmen, Old Dominion’s tandem of Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic claimed a 6-2 victory over Penn’s Sonya Latycheva and Stephanie Do. Also picking up a double’s win were Nike Khmolovska and Ivana Vukovic, as they beat Jaime Yapp-Shing and Srinidhi Raghavan, 6-2. Nikol Hristova and Melissa Esnal Olguin’s match was stopped while the score was 2-2, due to the clinch rule.

In singles, Nika Khmolovska took down Jaime Yapp-Shing in straight sets (7-6(7), 7-5). Marijana Novakovic also won her single’s match, as she made quick work of Penn’s Stephanie Do (6-2, 6-2). Also handling business for the Lady Monarchs, was the senior from Spain, Melissa Esnal Olguin, who got the better of Srinidhi Raghavan in a marathon of a match (5-7, 6-1, 11-9).
