Camden Wood Selig became the director of athletics for Old Dominion University on July 1, 2010. Dr. Selig hit the ground running with a new strategic plan implemented for the department, upgraded athletic facilities, and spearheaded fund raising projects for a new basketball practice facility and baseball and soccer stadium enhancements. Most recently Selig assisted ODU President John Broderick in announcing the Monarchs move to Conference USA in 2013 while elevating the football program to the FBS level in 2014. Under his leadership, the 2011-12 athletic year was another brilliant year competitively for ODU teams and student-athletes defining "Championship Effort" on the fields of competition. The 2011-12 year was highlighted by NCAA post season appearances in men's basketball, football (second round), men's soccer (second round), wrestling, men's swimming, and field hockey (Final Four). ODU student-athletes received six CAA Players of the Year, three CAA Defenders of the Year, two CAA Rookies of the Year, three CAA tournament MVP's, and three scholar Athletes of the Year honors. At the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, ODU athletics was ranked as the 79th best Division I program in the nation among the 340 Division I programs and highest in the CAA. Additionally, ODU's student-athletes did a masterful job in the classroom as over half earned a 3.0 or better last semester. Almost 5% of all ODU student athletes earned a perfect 4.0 last fall as the department continues to graduate about 92% of student-athletes who exhaust their eligibility. With Selig's direction, Old Dominion Athletic Foundation members and donors helped athletics achieve a record setting philanthropic year with annual giving exceeding $3 million and membership hitting an all time high of nearly 3,000 donors. Collectively, private giving to the ODAF exceeded $6 million in 2011 and funds are over half way toward the $8 million fundraising goal to construct a new, state of the art men's and women's basketball practice facility. "I am excited about our intercollegiate athletic future," says Selig. "We all have a role in our success, from student-athletes, parents, coaches, athletic staff, University faculty/staff, corporate sponsors, our fans and donors. It is a shared responsibility embraced by all and I know we are collectively up for this challenge. We look forward to a successful final year in the CAA and our exciting Conference USA future." A native of Norfolk, Selig spent 11 years directing the Western Kentucky University Hilltopper program, which won 70 Sun Belt Conference championships since from 2000-2010 and a national- record 19 crowns during the 2008-10 seasons. He was a key figure in guiding the WKU football program's move from NCAA Division I-AA to I-A in 2007, and he spearheaded more than $100 million in new construction and renovations of Hilltopper facilities. The Hilltoppers also won more individual Sun Belt academic honors than any other league school from 2005-2010, and every men's and women's athletic team exceeded the NCAA-required 925 Academic Progress Rate. "The appointment of Dr. Selig ensures that we will not only maintain ODU's success, but also provide our program with the direction it needs to continue to grow and prosper. His experience as a strong fundraiser, along with his personnel and business leadership abilities and his background in sales and marketing, made him a solid choice for our search committee," said ODU President John R. Broderick regarding Dr. Selig's appointment in 2010. Selig was a four year member (2006-2010) of the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee and served as chair for both the Sun Belt Conference Athletic Directors and the Men's Basketball Committees during his tenure at WKU. He recently served on the prestigious Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet as the CAA's representative. Locally, he serves on the Board of Trustees for Norfolk Collegiate School and the board of the Norfolk Forum. Selig earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Washington and Lee University, a master's in sports administration from Ohio University and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Virginia with a minor in business from the Darden School of Business. Selig and his wife, Ellen Miller Selig of Annapolis MD, have three children, Lex, 15, Nick, 13, and Julianna, 8. |
