ODU Finishes Fourth at ICSA/Gill National Championship

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The Old Dominion Monarch sailing team finished fourth at the 2009 ICSA/Gill Co-Ed Dinghy National Championship today, marking the teams best finish since winning it in 1998. ODU totaled 262 points in a complete rotation this week as the A division team finished in third place. Junior skipper Kyle Rogachenko led the A division team as skipper of all 18 races, steering ODU to 111 total points. He sailed with Wilson Stout, Alan Alkins and senior Jaci Finney. In just four races on Wednesday, Rogachenko added a win and a second place effort. For the entire regatta, the A division boat sailed to three wins and 13 top ten finishes. In B division, senior skipper Mikey Brown skippered all but two races, leading ODU to a sixth place effort with 151 total points. He sailed with Alissa Ayres and Michael Komar and Stephanie Roble stepped in as skipper for a set. The B division team added a 12th top ten effort on Wednesday. Together, the Monarchs finished with 262 points. Georgetown took third with 231 while the Seahawks of St. Mary's College outraced Yale on the final day to win the event with 179 total points. The Monarchs qualified for the Co-ed National Championship for the first time since the 2004-05 season, when the team finished sixth. ODU finished fourth in the 2002 event and fifth in 2001.
