HAMPTON, VA - Gillen Elder (Norfolk, VA) and Bryan Otis (Reston, VA) top the A division with 25 points at the Hampton Bay Days Regatta to help the Monarchs take first place overall with 66 points last weekend. Wick Smith (Chapel Hill, NC) and Matthew McCoy (Norfolk, VA) took fifth place in B division with 41 points. ODU beat out many local teams in the regatta including Christopher Newport, Hampton, Virginia Tech, and William and Mary. A total of 10 races were sailed for each division on Sunday in cloudy, misty conditions with a steady north to northeast breeze at 6 -12 miles per hour. Saturday races were postponed because of severe conditions and torrential rainfall barreling through Hampton Roads. The wind never reached over 20 miles per hour, but it shifted 360 degrees twice during the course of the day making it impossible to set a racecourse. Also this weekend, the MAISA Men's Singlehanded qualifier was held at King's Point. ODU's Bobby Noonan (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) finished 10th with 115 points and Charles Higgins (Arlington, TX) finished 13th with 138 points. The top three sailors advanced to the MAISA Men's Singlhanded Nationals. Saturday the race started off with south winds 15-20 miles per hour building to 20-25 by the fourth race. The race was cut short when wind gusts were recorded at 51 knots, there were five breakdowns filed and awarded for broken top sections, a pintle, and a vang block. Sunday racing picked back up with 20 mile per hour winds from the North that slowly decreased throughout the day. A total of 13 races were sailed.
