Freshman Sailors Finish Sixth At MAISA Freshman Regatta

NORFOLK, VA - Old Dominion freshman sailors claimed sixth place at the MAISA Freshman Regatta this weekend with 201 points. 16 races were completed in 10-15 mph winds Saturday and Sunday. Mike Brown (Hampton, VA), Wick Smith (Chapel hill, NC), and Elyssa Albert (Percellville, VA) sailed in A division for a total of 113 points and eighth place. Gillen Elder (Norfolk, VA) and Jaci Finney (Hampton, VA) finished fifth in B division with 88 points. The top seven teams in the competition qualify for the Atlantic Coast Freshman Championships set to take place at Brown University later this season. Also this weekend, ODU women's sailors took 17th and 28th place at the MAISA Women's Singlehanded competition. Cara DiSanti (Seacliff, NY) took a 17th place finish with 257 points, while Alissa Ayres (Trenton, NJ) scored a 28th place finish with 396 points. Finally, the results are in from the Hanbury Cup Regatta held this weekend at the CNU Sailing center and Old Dominion finished fourth with 110 points. The courses were modified trapezoids and modified triangle, with great conditions of solid winds 5-20 mph switching from the south and northwest. Sixteen races were held in A and B divisions using both 420s and FJs. In A division, Michael Smith (Newport News, VA) skippered with Lisa Shapiro (Reston, VA) crewing on Saturday, while Sunday Matt Kepner (Sadus Point, NY) and Shapiro paired up for a total of 51 points. Mark Birkmeier (Delphos, OH) and Bryan Otis teamed up in B division to grab fourth place with 59 points.
