USA Pitching Staff Under Meyers Beats Cuba, 1-0

HAARLEM, The Netherlands -- Kendal Volz (Baylor; Bulverde, Texas) caught pinch-hitter Yoandrys Urgelles looking on a 2-2 slider for the third out of the ninth, stranding runners at second and third as the USA Baseball National Team defeated Cuba 1-0 in Sunday's Haarlem Baseball Week pool-play action at Pim Mullier Stadium. Team USA improved to 9-0 on its 2008 tour and is the only remaining undefeated team at Haarlem Baseball Week.

This is the fifth shutout for Team USA this summer under the direction of ODU head coach Jerry Meyers who is serving aspitching coach.

Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.), Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.) and Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL.) who were selectedin the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month have been assigned to minor league clubs.Dan Hudson, and Dexter Carter will play for the Great Falls (MT.) Voyagers in the Pioneer League.Anthony Shawler will play for the Oneonta Tigers in the New York-Penn League and Ryan Bergh will be with the Clearwater Thrashers of the Gulf Coast League.

NORFOLK, VA--Three more Monarch pitchers were selected inthe Major League Baseball draft Friday. Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA./Oscar Smith HS) was chosen in the ninth round by the Detroit Tigers, Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC. Greenbrier Christian) was picked in the 13th by the Chicago White Sox, and senior Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL) waspicked in the 26th round by the Philadelphia Phillies.

They join juniorrighthander Dan Hudson (Virginia Beach, Va.) who was picked in the fifth round by the White Sox on Thursday.Four selections in one draft ties a school mark set in 2006,1984 and1992.

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior outfielder Brian Conley's grand slam highlighted a nine-run uprising in the third inning as sixth-seeded Towson stayed alive in the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship with a 17-10 triumph over fifth-seeded Old Dominion Thursday at Brooks Field. NORFOLK, VA-- The ODU Baseball Monarchs will open the 2008 CAA BaseballChampionships Wednesday at 12 noon against James Madison at Brooks Fieldin Wilmington, NC.ODU (25-25/14-14) is the fifth seed and JMU is the second seed (34-17/20-9).

WILMINGTON, NC--UNC Wilmington scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Old Dominion, 5-3 in the final regular season Colonial Athletic Association game. ODU is 25-25 overall and 14-14 in the CAA, while 26th ranked UNCW is 41-13-1 overall and 25-4-1 in the CAA. Jimmy Miles and Gerard Hall both had two hits on the day for ODU. ODU will be the fifth seed in next weeks CAA tournament and take on second seeded James Madison on Wednesday. UNCW will be the top seed and play sixth seed Towson who defeated Georgia State for the sixth and final tournament spot.
