ARTHUR `BUTTONS' SPEAKES 'Buttons Speakes'was a two-sport star at Old Dominion University, lettering in basketball and baseball. Speakes scored 1,005 career points and earned a professional baseball offer following a standout career at third base. Speakes was a high school All-American in football and all-state performer in basketball and baseball in Huntington, WV. He earned Most Valuable Player honors in basketball his sophomore season, and went on to hit .364 in baseball that spring. His season season, the basketball squad posted a 21-10 record and captured the school's first Mason-Dixon Conference title and an NCAA South Atlantic Regional berth. Speakes continued to excel in baseball as well, hitting .299 his junior year, and .330 as a senior. He graduated from Old Dominion in 1970.
