NORFOLK, VA- Old Dominion pounded out three homers along with 15 hits and senior righthander Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ.) fanned seven to lead the Monarchs to a 16-3 victory over Iona in the season opener for both teams.

The Monarchs broke the game open with a nine-run third inning. The inning was highlighted on a three-run homer by Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.), followed by a solo shot by Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.).

Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.) led the Monarchs with three hits on the day, while Cipolla, freshman Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.-Oscar Smith HS), Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) and Jesse Scheoendienst (Belcamp, MD.) each had two hits on the day. Zahm and Brooks Sinned (Virginia Beach, VA.-Kellam HS) each knocked in three runs. Sinnen hit a three-run shot in the eighth. Kevin Gunter fanned seven, with just two walks in six innings of work, while Dan Hudson (Virginia Beach, VA.-Princess Anne HS), Needham Jones (Portsmouth, Va.-Wilson HS) and Ross Fetterly (Norfolk, VA. -Granby HS) also pitched.

Iona was led by Matt Costello and Joe Lorenzo with two hits each. Lorenzo scored On a wild pitch in the third, then Keith Kenney scored on a groundout by Paul Salerno. The third Iona run came in the fifth when Matt Callahan doubled home Costello. Game two of the three game series will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
