NORFOLK, VA-Navy defeated Old Dominion, 4-2 Saturday afternoon behind the pitching of Ryan Hefner, Burgess Nichols, and Joe Koessler. Navy is now 1-3, and ODU is 1-1.

All four of the Midshipmen runs were unearned. With the bases loaded in the fifth Ryan McGinn, Scott Pastell, Pete Curnow scored with two outs when Rick Amos' fly ball was dropped.

The Monarchs answered in the bottom of the fifth as junior centerfielder Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) singled home Brian Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) and Kenneth Gram (Tempe, AZ.). Eric Mesa (Miami, FL.) led the Monarchs with two hits.

Navy's final run came on an infield error as Ryan McGinn scored with two outs in the top of the ninth. ODU threatened in the ninth as Cipolla led off with a walk and Mesa singled with two outs, but Koessler retired Chipman on a fly ball to center.

James Burok (Archbald, PA.) suffered his first loss of the season with three strikeouts, two walks and six hits. Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.) fanned four batters in relief and allowed one unearned run. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
