Monarchs Pound Out 18 Hits In 14-4 Win Over Akron
Feb. 22, 2009 WINSTON-SALEM, NC-- Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.), Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) and Brett Harris (Chesapeake, VA.) each drove in three runs to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion (2-2) to a 14-4 victory over Akron Sunday afternoon in the Wake Forest Baseball Invitational. Hall and Harris each had three hits on the day, while Josh Wright had four hits and scored three times. The Monarchs pounded out 18 hits on the day, including four doubles, and seven stolen bases. ODU exploded for six runs in the fourth led by a two-run double by freshman designated hitter Brett Harris which plated Josh Wright and Austin Wright (Virginia Beach, VA.). Gerard Hall and Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) also knocked in runs in that inning. Junior righthander Chris Boggs (Manassas, VA.) pitched six innings, fanning six on the day for his first win as a Monarch. Brady Burchill (Hope, ND.) and Austin Wright pitched the final three innings of scoreless baseball. The three fanned 11 batters in all. Four Monarchs, Cameron Scott (Cullpeper, Va.), Max Most (Port Washington, NY), Brett Harris and Josh Wright had a double each. The Monarchs also stole seven bases led by Cameron Scott with three and Gerard Hall with two.
Akron was led by Brandon White who knocked in three runs on a homerun in the fifth inning. The Zips had 14 hits on the day with Kevin Haas and John Turk getting three each. ODU returns to action on Tuesday when ODU travels to VMI on Feb. 24th and Longwood on the 25th, before opening at home on Feb. 27th against St. Joseph's.
