Baseball Falls to Rutgers in Series Opener, 3-0
Feb. 22, 2013
NORFOLK, Va.- Jeff Melillo hit a solo home run in the second inning and Rutgers tacked on two runs in the eighth inning to defeat Old Dominion University baseball 3-0 Friday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, behind the four-hit pitching of Rob Smorol. The win is the first of the season for the Scarlet Knights, as they move to 1-3 while ODU drops to 1-2 on the year. Because of the rain in the area, Saturday's game has been moved to 6 p.m.
Melillo hit his first homer of the year in the second inning off of ODU starter Dean Ali and it was the only hit the ODU starter allowed in his five innings of work and the only hit for Rutgers until the seventh inning.
Rutgers senior pitcher Rob Smorol earned his first win of the year, pitching eight innings, striking out seven and allowing just four hits.
In the eighth inning, Rutgers added a pair of insurance runs as Nick Favatella and Brian O'Grady hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make the score 3-0.
The Monarchs had an opportunity to score in the first inning as Tyler Urps got hit by a pitch to lead off the game while Jordan Negrini got a two-out single but Smorol got a fly out to end the threat. Reliever Nathaniel Roe pitched a scoreless ninth to record the save.
The Monarchs and Scarlet Knights are back in action Saturday at 6 p.m.
