Monarchs Win Thriller Over Virginia Tech, 2-1
Feb. 24, 2002 CHARLESTON, SC. - Demarque Hairston (Martinsville, Va.) singled home Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) with the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth with two-outs to propel Old Dominion (4-4) past Virginia Tech (2-1), in the Berkeley Electric Shootout in Riley Park. Monarch freshman starter Justin Verlander (Goochland, Va.) pitched 5.2 Innings of no-hit baseball when Marc Tugwell got an infield single and Chris Stanton scored on a throwing error. Verlander pitched 7.2 innings, fanned a career high 12 batters (he fanned nine vs. Navy and eight vs Duke), allowed three hits and one unearned run in the no decision. Monarch reliever Kevin Evans (Shamong, NJ.) Picked up the victory to improve to 2-1. Virginia Tech starter Jason Bush also pitched six strong innings, fanning five and allowing one run. Old Dominion tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.) Singled and scored on a RBI double by Brandon LeNoir (Ocala, Fl.). The Monarchs return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Radford for a 2:00 game.
