NORFOLK, VA--Junior Justin Gregula knocked in three runs, including a two-run single in Old Dominion University's (6-5) four-run eighth as the Monarchs defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, 5-1 Friday afternoon. Monarch pitchers Bryan Hansen (Vass, NC.) and James Burok (Archbald, PA.) scatted eight hits and fanned eight. UMBC is 0-1.

ODU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) singled home Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.). The Retrievers tied the game in the eighth with runners on first and third. Ian Carman singled up the middle, scoring Mark Lemon.

In the bottom of the eighth, Steve Harris (Va. Beach, VA.) led off with a double. With one out, Cipolla was intentionally walked and Tyler Belcher (Bristol,VA.) also walked. Gregula then singled, Scoring Cipolla and Harris. C.J. Jacinto followed with a single which plated Belcher. Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY.) completed the uprising by singling home Gregula. Gregula now has nine runs batted in this season.

Belcher led ODU with three hits on the day while Chris Cerullo had three hits for UMBC. UMBC starter Kyle Wildasin allowed one run on six hits through five innings.

James Burok picked up his second win of the year. Starter Bryan Hansen held UMBC scoreless for 7.2 innings, striking out seven with no walks allowed. both teams play game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
